A new boiler won’t fix an old, dirty system

Your boiler is only one part of your central heating. The rest — the radiators, the pipework and other components — may pre-date the appliance. Current 2026 guidance from Sentinel summarises the recommended approach: clean and flush the system, add the correct inhibitor, fit a permanent in-line filter and test the system water annually. Fernox’s 2026 guidance says the five-year step is either re-dosing the inhibitor or carrying out a full laboratory water test — not automatically doing both.

Guarantee conditions are model- and scheme-specific. For example, Vaillant’s extended-guarantee terms require its protection kit, a filter, flushing and inhibitor, while Worcester Bosch lists filters as a condition for particular standard or extended guarantees. Do not assume every brand has identical wording: check the guarantee for the exact boiler. A claim may be declined where contamination or non-compliant installation caused the failure.

  • Fit a magnetic filter on the return to the boiler, so any magnetite that forms later is captured before it reaches the heat exchanger.
  • Add the correct inhibitor to slow the corrosion that creates sludge in the first place.
  • Check the water each year as a confirmed maintenance task alongside the annual service, then re-dose or investigate as the test and current BS 7593 guidance require.

These are established water-treatment steps, but the cleaning method must match the condition of the system.

What to do if your new boiler already keeps breaking down

If you’re already in this situation, start with a boiler repair diagnosis and a system-water assessment. A separate component defect, leak or installation fault needs its own repair; cleaning alone cannot cure every symptom.
