Engineer Diagnostic Tip
Check your copper discharge pipe outside on your exterior wall. If you see dripping or white water scale marks under the pipe after your heating runs, your expansion vessel is flat and the PRV is discharging.
When shower water runs piping hot, drops freezing cold for 30 seconds, and then heats up again, 99% of the time it is caused by central heating sludge restricting the secondary plate heat exchanger, not limescale.
As black iron oxide magnetite builds up inside the tiny waterways, heat cannot transfer fast enough into your domestic water. The boiler overheats internally on its high-limit thermostat, shuts off the gas burner to protect itself, cools down, and then reignites, creating an exhausting temperature cycle.

- Cold at the bottom, hot at the top: Heavy black magnetite sludge settling along the base of the radiator, preventing hot water circulation. Sludge cannot be bled out; the system requires a chemical flush or powerflush.
